Keeping North Cove Elementary Healthy!

 

Hello North Cove Parents/Staff/Students!

My name is Tonya Flynn and I am the school nurse at North Cove Elementary. This is my 13th year as a Licensed Practical Nurse and my 3rd year as a school nurse. I know what a wonderful community and family North Cove Elementary truly is and feel very privileged to be a part of it! I sincerely look forward to taking care of the students this school year and for many years to come.

I strive to provide excellent nursing care on a daily basis. 

Nurse’s Schedule:

I am at North Cove Elementary 7:45 am - 3:00 pm Monday - Friday.

Planned Screenings:

Dental Screening: NC Smile Mobile Dental Clinic and Dental Hygienist from the McDowell County Health Department.

Vision: 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades (will also take teacher/parent referrals on any student).

Education: Hygiene and Puberty education

Students with Special Health Conditions:

If your child has a health condition that may require emergency care such as severe allergic reactions, diabetes, asthma, or seizures it is very important that you notify the school nurse so that an Emergency Action Plan is completed as soon as possible.

Special Diet Request:

For your child to receive a special diet (food at breakfast or lunch), a physician’s order is required. Forms are available upon request from the school nurse.

Medication Policy:

If your child will need medication during the school day (prescription or over the counter) your child’s doctor needs to complete a green medication administration form. You may request this form in the office. A new form must be filled out each new school year. All medications must be brought to school by a parent or guardian. Medications can not be transported in the student’s bookbag. Medications must be in the original bottle properly labeled with the student’s name. The school can not give the first dose of a medication. Phone permission is not allowed.

For example, if your child needs medication for a headache and a green medication administration form is not on file and medication is not at the school; a parent must come to the school to administer the medication.

Contagious Disease:

To help prevent the spread of contagious germs please follow these guidelines below on when your student can return to school when they are sick: 

• Fever 100.4 or above   -    (Can return to school 24hrs fever-free unmedicated)
• Vomiting           -                 (Can return to school 24hrs Vomiting-free unmedicated)
• Diarrhea           -                 (Can return to school 24hrs Diarrhea-free unmedicated)
• Pink Eye          -                 (Can return to school 24hrs after first dose of antibiotics)
• Strep Throat     -               (Can return to school 24hrs after first dose of antibiotics)
• Covid               -                  Please contact the School Nurse about return to school date
